How to build JPA Criteria query as workaround for the limitations in the length of an IN Clause

In SQL I can use this workaround for the limitations in the length of an IN Clause.

SELECT *
FROM process p
WHERE p.process_instanz_id IN (SELECT t.column1
                               FROM (VALUES ('0001'),
                                            ('0002'),
                                            ('0003'),
                                            ...
                                            ('0998'),
                                            ('0999'),
                                            ('1000')) AS t(column1));

How can I do this with JPA criteria API?

Newer versions of Hibernate ORM workaround this limitation automatically. What version are you using and encountering this problem with?
Also, what database and database version do you use?

I am using WildFly 35.0.1.Final which uses Hibernate 6.6.3.Final. Running queries against Postgres runs fine but when using MS-SQLServer 2022 I get following error:

o.h.e.j.s.SqlExceptionHelper: The incoming request has too many parameters. The server supports a maximum of 2100 parameters. Reduce the number of parameters and resend the request.

How are you building the query? Do you have other parameters in that query?

I’m creating the IN-expression like this:

expr.in(filterOption.listValue().stream().map(String::toLowerCase).toList()

where FilterOption is like this:

public record ListFilterOption(String field, Collection listValue, FilterExpression expression) { }

This will create “value parameters” for every element, which doesn’t support the automatic splitting. You will need to create a list parameter e.g.

Parameter<List<String>> parameter = criteriaBuilder.parameter(List.class);
expr.in(parameter);

query.setParameter(parameter, filterOption.listValue().stream().map(String::toLowerCase).toList());

This is my method for the query:

public Collection<Beleg> getBelegeTest(int count) {
    final var cb = getCriteriaBuilder();
    final var query = cb.createQuery(Beleg.class);
    final var beleg = query.from(Beleg.class);

    final var parameter = cb.parameter(List.class);
    query.select(beleg).where(beleg.get(Beleg_.ID).in(parameter));

    final var tq = repository.getEntityManager().createQuery(query);
    final var ids = LongStream.rangeClosed(1, count).boxed().toList();

    tq.setParameter(parameter, ids);
    final var belege = tq.getResultList();
    return belege;
}

Calling this method with count = 2100 results in this query:

select
    b1_0.id
from
    mis2.beleg b1_0
where
    (
        b1_0.id in (?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, But only for MS SQL-Server - with PostgreSQL everything works as expected!

The split logic is behavior correctly as far as I can tell, so you’re simply running into the problem that you’re really using just way to many parameters.

You said you have a workaround, but I guess that doesn’t use parameters and instead relies on literals, correct? If so, then the query with the literals is not the same. It will be cached and optimized separately, which means it isn’t reusable.

You can use literals directly if you want, but know that the performance might be a bit worse, due to the repeated optimization SQL Server has to do, though it probably doesn’t matter much anyway with that many parameters.

public Collection<Beleg> getBelegeTest(int count) {
    final var cb = getCriteriaBuilder();
    final var query = cb.createQuery(Beleg.class);
    final var beleg = query.from(Beleg.class);

    final var ids = LongStream.rangeClosed(1, count).boxed().toList();
    query.select(beleg).where(beleg.get(Beleg\_.ID).in(ids.stream().map(id -> cb.literal(id.toLowerCase())).toList()));

    final var tq = repository.getEntityManager().createQuery(query);

    final var belege = tq.getResultList();
    return belege;
}

Works great with using literals and performance inpact is not so relevant in my case.

Thanks for your great support!
